ULF may back Sajith
The United Left Front is likely to change its stance at the Presidential elections and back the candidacy of Sajith Premadasa in response to representations made by its grassroots organisations, a senior member of the front told RepublicNext.
Earlier the ULF had decided to place its first preference for Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People’s Movement with the second preference given to the “candidate most likely to defeat the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna nominee.”
However there has been some confusion in the ranks as some senior leaders had called on the membership to vote for the JVP leader with no mention of a second preference.
At the same time there has been pressure from “grassroots organisations in the Kegalle and Kalutara areas” for the ULF to back the Swan, the symbol allocated to the Democratic National Front.
The ULF had earlier decided that their Members of Parliament now sitting on the government benches would remain there for the life of this Parliament.
