UNP Top Brass to amend alliance constitution
Four senior members of the United National Party will meet tonight to make changes to the proposed Constitution of the alliance the party plans to lead in the Presidential Election.
The four are Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is the Leader of the party, Chairman Kabir Hashim, Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella and General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
The proposed Constitution for the alliance, which will be known as the United Democratic Front, is contentious as a number of MPs and Ministers who are members of the UNP Working Committee raised objections to some of its clauses at a meeting yesterday.
They particularly objected to alliance partners having as much clout as the UNP.
The WC agreed to the alliance on the grounds that there will be amendments to the constitution. MPs and other members were asked to hand in their proposed amendments to UNP Chairman Hashim for consideration.
The alliance which will comprise many of the current members of the United National Front, as well as a possible breakaway group from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, is due to be formed on Monday 5 Aug.
These moves come as a revolt against the Prime Minister standing as the Presidential Candidate gathers steam.
There is strong support for Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa to be chosen as the candidate as an increasing number of MPs and WC members appear to see him as a winning captain for the multiple battles ahead.
