US State Secretary Mike Pompeo to visit Sri Lanka

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Sri Lanka between 24 and 28 June, the US Department of State announced yesterday (10).

According to State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, among the objectives of the visit is to explore avenues of bilateral cooperation.

“Secretary Pompeo will express America’s solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka as they stand united against the despicable Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. He will also discuss promising opportunities for U.S.-Sri Lanka cooperation based on shared commitments to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” she told US journalists.

The visit will be part of a series of scheduled visits covering Sri Lanka, India and Japan which, according to Morgan, seeks to broaden and deepen the United States’ partnership with key countries in order to advance the ‘shared goal of a free and open Indo Pacific.

The Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) signed between Sri Lanka and the US in 2007 has received much attention in the media of late, with its latest iteration (signed in 2017) reportedly containing over 50 annexures and listing US military establishments allowed to use Sri Lanka’s air ports and sea ports.
