Vasudeva tests positive for Covid as MPs contact tracing continues
ECONOMYNEXT – Health investigators have traced 24 close contacts of Parliamentarians Dayasiri Jayasekara and Rauff Hakeem and are conducting tests on them the Parliament’s office of communications said.
Director Communications Shan Wijethunga said of them one, government MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara has tested positive and another Gayantha Karunathilaka had tested negative.
The veteran politician Nanayakkara turned 82 last week and has been one of the first contacts of Hakeem.
Jayasekara has not attended Parliament although he may have had contacts with some Parliamentary colleagues when he was at a New Year’s religious ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party headquarters on January 1.
The Parliament also said that contact tracing for is also being done for Kumarasiri Hettige, a coordinating secretary for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who had also tested positive.
He, however, has not been in contact with any MPs, Wijethunga said.
The work of Parliament will go ahead as before the Sargent-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said.
Party leaders are to meet tomorrow to finalise the agenda for Parliamentary sittings and allocate time as is customary. (Colombo, January 11, 2021)
