“We are the people who ended the war” – Gota

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa held a rally in Jaffna today amid protests and tight security. Extraordinary security measures were enforced in the Jaffna city area with troops deployed on the streets.

He told the Northern Peninsula that better times are ahead. “Many people want you to live in the past but I will take you to the future,” he said.

Gotabaya said that they were not the people who started the war, “we are the people who ended the war.”

He referred to the manifesto released a few days ago and said that he has presented a policy platform that has clearly laid out a plan for the country’s future.

He said that his party realizes that most people in this country are living off agriculture and animal husbandry and these areas will be developed.

“Our administration will be people-centric” he pledged.

He also talked about the missing persons issue saying that compensation for the missing would be speeded up.

Earlier in the day the SLPP held a rally in Vavuniya where the candidate’s brother Leader of the Opposition Mahinda also spoke.

The former President said that this province where all the different communities live together is now at peace.

He said that the serious issues facing the agricultural workers need to be solved and their future administration will give priority to the reconstruction and repair of tanks and other irrigation works which have been neglected by this government.

Senior Tamil politicians Varatharaja Perumal and the SLPP ally Douglas Devananda were present and spoke at the rallies.

SLPP leaders such as Chairman Prof G L Peiris, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and others were present.

The mothers of missing persons staged a vociferous demonstration in Jaffna calling on the Rajapaksas to get out of the Peninsula.

They held up posters which said “Alleged war criminal Gotabaya should be should be produced before international Criminal Courts.”

“Arrest war criminals of Rajapaksa Brothers for Tamil genocide” and “Gota, leave Tamil homeland now!/What happened to our loved ones who were made to disappear in white van run by you?”
