“We made mistakes in hiring Hathuru” – SLC President admits
President of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) Shammi Silva has admitted that SLC had made mistakes in selecting Chandika Hathurusinghe as the National Coach.
“ I was also in the committee which selected Hathurusinghe as the coach but now we realise that we had done certain mistakes in selecting him, now we have to make up for those mistakes,” he added.
The Board has decided to appoint former Sri Lankan fast bowler Rumesh Rathnayake as the Interim Head Coach for the national team for the upcoming New Zealand series.
At a media briefing held yesterday (7 Aug) in Colombo, Silva said that the board has had a discussion with Hathurusinghe about changes to the terms of his contract.
Silva said that these discussions had not gone well and there was no settlement agreed upon.
SLC has now given Hathurisinghe 14 days to file an answer to the proposals the Board is offering him.
Silva also said that the current administration came into office with 2 months to the world cup so they decided to continue with Hathurusinghe.
Silva said that recently there had been discussions with the chief selector Asantha De Mel, Ashley De Silva and himself and had done so many changes to Sri Lanka Cricket.
Further, he said that the contract with Hathurusinghe ends on December 2020, He also said that he cannot reveal the issues in the contract as it is a legal matter and that the board now is legally ready to terminate the contract.
“We have to decide whether we suffer a financial loss by paying compensation or ruin the game in Sri Lanka,” Silva added.
Meanwhile, former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga says that it was not Hathrusinghe that destroyed cricket in Sri Lanka but the Cricket Administration.
