We will know which party has won the election by mid-night on Aug 6 – Deshapriya
ECONOMYNEXT- The final result of tomorrow’s Parliamentary General should be known by midnight on Thursday, August 6, the Chairman of the National Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has said.
This would be the composition of the Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Deshapriya told reporters while on an inspection tour of polling stations in Gampaha today that the preferential results would be known the following day by midnight on Friday, August 7.
The Commissioner-General of the National Elections Commission Saman Sri Rathnayake said counting will begin at 8 am on August 6 and the first results would be available in the afternoon.
The decision to break the tradition of beginning the count on the same day as the poll and start the following morning was taken with the health of the staff in mind, Rathnayake told EconomyNext.
“The staff get very tired when they conduct the poll and go straight into counting. Therefore their resistance level becomes low, and we did not want to take risks,” he said.
Deshapriya also said that all the results will be gazetted by August 8 and of the national lists will be submitted by August 9.
“All the gazettes pertaining to the General Elections 2020 will be Gazetted by August 10,” the Chairman said.
Accordingly, 16,263,885 registered voters from 22 electoral districts will vote to select 196 members to the parliament from 7,452 candidates from 20 mainstream parties and 34 independent parties through 12,985 polling centres island-wide in the General Elections 2020.
The members for the remaining 29 seats will be selected to the parliament through the national list. (Colombo, August 4, 2020)
