Weerasinghe tipped as Sri Lanka’s new CB Governor: Sources

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Deputy Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weeresinghe is mostly likely to replace outgoing Governor Arjuna Mahendran, sources said.

There was no confirmation from the office of the President, who is the appointing authority.

Weerasinghe is the most senior Deputy Governor appointed to the post in 2011.

Weerasinghe is a career officer who was wide experience in economic research, monetary policy and had also served at the International Monetary Fund as alternative executive director.

Other names mentioned as possible appointees include Charitha Ratwatte, Ranjith Fernando, Dinesh Weerakkody, Lalith Samarakoon and Saman Kelegama. Deputy Minister Eran Wickremeratne has not confirmed reports of his possible appointment.

Sri Lanka’s President and Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe have visited the Central Bank.

President Sirisena tweeted earlier in the day saying a new Central Bank Governor will be appointed within hours. (Colombo/June29/2016 – Update)
