Sri Lanka arrests Mrs World over battle of beauties
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s police Thursday arrested the reigning Mrs World Caroline Jurie over her role in de-crowning Mrs. Sri Lanka in front of a stunned audience and causing damage to the Nelum Pokuna performing arts theatre.
Police said Jurie and her associate Chula Manamendra who was seen yanking the crown from this year’s winner Pushpika de Silva was taken into custody following an investigation into Sunday’s fracas at Nelum Pokuna which had become international news.
“We have taken Mrs Jurie and Chula Manamedra into custody in connection with the ugly scenes at the Mrs. Sri Lanka pageant,” a police officer said.
The pair were accused of disrupting the high profile event and causing disrepute to Sri Lanka with what many saw as unbecoming behavior.
Calls mounted on Facebook and Twitter to strip Caroline Jurie of her Mrs. World title which she won last year from the California-based Mrs. World Inc. Similar titles are handed out by many such organisations.
The local franchise holder of the Mrs. World event of the California-based company, Chandimal Jayasinghe, has said that Caroline Jurie was responsible for damages to the Nelum Pokuna dressing rooms.
Jayasinghe also asked Jurie to pay damages and compensation for the fracas.
Social media memes have begun calling Caroline Jurie Mrs. Under World” after what many called was thuggish-like display by her and Chula Manamendra. (COLOMBO, April 8, 2021)
