Sri Lanka conducts 15,000 Coroanvirus tests in BOI factories, 200 Covid-19 cases confirmed
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has conducted around 10,000 tests in industrial zones under the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and 5,000 in those outside State Minister for Aviation and Investment Zone Development D V Chanaka said.
There has no plan to close the zones he told reporters but will follow health regulations.
He said that the ministry is focused on ensuring the safety of the workforce as well as continuation of the production process.
According to health sector information around 212 cases had been confirmed in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone.
Authorities have already placed under Coronavirus curfew, Katunayake where the largest number of workers have been confirmed.
In Gamapaha where the largest export zones are located 19 police areas are under curfews. Factories cannot bring staff from curfew areas to work.
On Sunday Hirdramani group said a nurse had been confirmed in a factory in Kahathuduwa. In Nittambuwa another factory had been confirmed.
Sri Lanka’s latest cluster expanded as Sri Lanka was getting more export orders.
Minister Chanaka said around 70 percent of Sri Lanka’s exports come from BOI approved factories.
Overall about 500,000 persons are employed in 1,800 factories.
Sri Lanka has confirmed 5,538 cases with over 2,000 coming from the latest cluster. (Colombo/Oct19/2020)
